A COUNTRY CHURCH

CHURCH OF ST FRANCIS XAVIER BERRIMA

following a design by A.W.N. Pugin

Some photo's from a recent visit.

What struck me apart from some of the very ugly fittings like the fluorescent light and the appalling stained glass in the chancel, was how very like the Church of St Augustine (now the parish Hall) at Balmain it is.

The Altar
A small lancet window

A side long view from the east end of the church to the side portal
None of the corbels have been carved, nor are there any blocks near the sedile for carving, but there is a beautiful sedile set into the wall which bespeaks the places of the priest, deacon and subdeacon

Striking too are the beams of the ceiling and of course the sepulchre set into the wall opposite the  sedelia with windows letting in light above it.

The Sepulchre become a recess for chairs

A Larger lancet window in the nave

The roof interior - quite a highlight

The sedile - very elegant

The reredos from Bowral I think - not really suitable

The Sacracity door and Sedile - some horse hair cushion might be nice

One is always inspired to complete this building, - the blocks should be carved around the windows - a small rood screen perhaps.  Perhaps a sanctuary makeover - remove those awful chancel windows!!!

Yes those little blue stickers on the Altar lace are little Australian flags for Australia Day - it is beyond tacky.
